2 Pedestrians Killed In Newark On New Year's Weekend: Authorities

Two Essex County residents died from vehicle impacts last weekend, prosecutors say.

Newark, NJ – Authorities have released the names of two pedestrians who sustained fatal injuries in separate unrelated incidents in Newark last weekend.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, the first incident took place around 8:53 p.m. on Saturday, when a pedestrian was struck and killed in the 100 block of Bergen Street in Newark by a man driving a Volkswagen Passat.

According to prosecutors, the victim, April Townsend, 45, of Newark, was transported to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead at University Hospital at 10:51 p.m.

The second incident took place on Sunday, when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a man driving a Toyota 4 Runner SUV in the vicinity of Mount Prospect Avenue and Bloomfield Avenue in Newark.

Prosecutors identified the victim as Saul Simoes, 75, of Newark.

According to authorities, Simoes was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m.

In both cases, the drivers remained at the scene, authorities stated.

No charges have been filed against either driver, but investigations into both incidents are active, prosecutors stated.
