2022 Election Guide For NJ-10: Donald Payne Faces 4 Challengers

Payne, a Democrat, is facing a challenge from a Republican, a Libertarian and two independent candidates.

NEW JERSEY — The 2022 general election is just around the bend, and there will be plenty of choices for Garden State residents to make when they turn in their ballots. Here’s what you need to know about voting in the 10th Congressional District in New Jersey, which is currently represented by U.S. Rep. Donald Payne Jr.

New Jersey’s recently redrawn 10th Congressional district includes the following municipalities:

  • Essex County – Caldwell, East Orange, Essex Fells, Irvington, Montclair (part), Newark (part), Orange, Verona, West Orange
  • Hudson County – Jersey City (part)
  • Union County – Cranford, Garwood, Hillside, Kenilworth, Linden (part), Roselle, Roselle Park, Union Township

According to a statewide summary released on Sept. 1, there were 488,049 registered voters in the 10th district, including 272,698 Democrats, 39,434 Republicans and 169,843 voters not affiliated with any party.

THE BALLOT

Rep. Payne earned the Democratic Party nomination again in this year’s primary election. David Pinckney, a public school teacher, has clinched the Republican nomination, and Kendal Ludden is running on the Libertarian Party line. Other independent candidates include Clenard Howard Childress Jr. and Cynthia Johnson.

HOW TO VOTE

Election Day takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8. There are three ways to turn in your ballot for the 2022 general election in New Jersey.

Vote By Mail – Every active registered voter is eligible to request a vote-by-mail ballot. If you would like to receive your ballot by mail, you must request your ballot not less than seven days before an election. Otherwise, you must get your vote-by-mail ballot in-person from your county clerk by 3 p.m. the day before Election Day. Voters have until 8 p.m. on Election Day to return their ballot to the Board of Elections in person, or deposit it in one of their county’s authorized ballot drop boxes. You can also mail your ballot; it must be postmarked on or before 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Vote In-Person (Early) – New Jersey passed a law in 2021 that allows residents to vote early during a nine-day period before Election Day. For the 2022 general election, the early voting period takes place from Oct. 29 to Nov. 6. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday).

Vote In-Person (on Election Day) – The 2022 general election takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Find your location polling place here.
