Adam Zipkin Appointed Newark Deputy Mayor

Zipkin takes over as deputy mayor of economic and housing development

Adam Zipkin has been appointed deputy mayor of economic and housing development in Newark, city officials have confirmed.

Zipkin, who was sworn in Tuesday during a small ceremony at city hall, will serve as both director and deputy mayor of economic and housing development, according to Esmeralda Cameron, a city spokeswoman.

Zipkin had previously served as the city's working alongside Stefan Pryor, former deputy mayor of economic and housing development. Pryor, who had been deputy mayor since 2006, to become education commissioner of Connecticut.

"For the past five years, as chief of staff for this department, our dedicated team and I have worked together to build momentum into this, Newark’s groundbreaking year. My goal is to continue the progress and make this a groundbreaking decade," said Zipkin in an emailed statement. "From affordable housing to job opportunities in all five wards, my focus everyday will be to create opportunities that improve the lives of Newark residents."

Zipkin is also chairman of Newark's Brick City Development Corporation and joins Margarita Muniz as one of two deputy mayors of Newark. Muniz serves as deputy mayor of neighborhood engagement.

"He is a strong team player and team member, and has a strong vision that will continue to lead the transformation of the City of Newark."
