Today's riddle: What do an island and the letter "t" have in common? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Around Newark: ICE Arrests + Property Taxes + Voting + Polluted River (patch.com) — Essex County residents get a roundup of major developments, from ICE enforcement and environmental cleanup along the Passaic River to property tax changes and vote-by-mail guidance. Newark-area readers will note coverage of a major Puerto Rican Day Parade in New Jersey's largest city, plus public safety concerns, abandoned pets, and a new $200 million "germ protection hub" planned in the county.
2. Man accused of punching and pepper-spraying woman after she bumps into child on Newark bus (shorenewsnetwork.com) — Newark police are asking for the public's help after a woman was allegedly punched and pepper-sprayed on NJ Transit Bus 25 near Bergen Street and Springfield Avenue Monday evening. Officers say the attack followed an abrupt stop that caused her to accidentally bump into a child with the suspect. The victim was treated at University Hospital, and anonymous tips to the Crime Stoppers line could earn a reward.
3. Popular Puerto Rican Day Parade Will Return To NJ's Largest City This Weekend (patch.com) — Newark's 65th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade steps off today at noon along Bloomfield Avenue, with a festival in Branch Brook Park celebrating local Puerto Rican culture and pride. Residents should expect street closures around Broadway, Bloomfield Avenue, and nearby side streets from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and plan alternate routes while enjoying the long-running neighborhood tradition.
4. UPDATE: Victim Dies in Newark West Ward Shooting Incident (rlsmedia.com) — A juvenile has died after being shot Friday evening near South 9th Street and 15th Avenue in Newark's West Ward, and prosecutors are now investigating. The killing happened about a day after another fatal shooting nearby, and authorities have not said whether the two homicides are connected. Police have not released victim identities or suspect information.
5. NJ Transit service cuts coming during Portal Bridge work (nj1015.com) — NJ Transit riders traveling between Newark and Secaucus face a 50% train reduction from October 11 to November 16 as crews finish shifting service from the old Portal Bridge to the new Portal North Bridge. Overall rail service will drop about 10%, and many Midtown Direct trains will be diverted to Hoboken. PATH, buses, and ferries will cross-honor tickets during the disruption.
