Avoid These Flood-Prone Streets In Newark This Weekend, Officials Say

NEWARK, NJ — Newark public safety officials are warning residents not to drive through flooded streets if the rain starts coming down this weekend.

The stormy weather is expected to arrive Friday before 11 p.m., followed by a chance of showers until 5 a.m., and then rain after 5 a.m. on Saturday. The deluge will likely continue after 11 a.m. on Saturday, with a 90 percent chance of rain.

The Newark Department of Public Safety shared the following list of flood-prone local streets, asking drivers to avoid them during the storm:

• Clay Street and McCarter Highway
• South Street and Van Buren Street
• Jefferson and Chestnut Streets
• State Street near Broad Street
• Jabez and Backus Streets
• 357 Wilson Avenue
• Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street
• Magazine Street and Avenue L
• Magazine Street and Amsterdam Street
• Raymond Boulevard and Blanchard Street
• Avenue L and Wilson Avenue
• Wilson Avenue and Avenue K
• Mary Street and Avenue L
• Ferry and Foundry Streets
• Hyatt Avenue and Wilson Avenue
• South Street and Adams Street
• South Street and Pulaski Street
• South Street and Pacific Street
• South Street and Dawson Street

The Department of Public Safety said it is coordinating responses to burglar alarms, flooding, and other weather-related incidents through the combined efforts of police, fire and the Office of Emergency Management.

"Special attention should be given to unsecured outdoor furniture, awnings, refuse, and building materials," Newark officials said.

For fire safety, residents should use flashlights instead of candles if they lose power due to this weather event. For non-emergency weather-related incidents, call 973-733-6000. For emergencies, dial 911.
