1. Company Plans To Revive Shuttered Car Wash In Newark (patch.com) — Newark drivers in the Ironbound can look forward to a revamped car wash as Zap Car Wash prepares to reopen the former Skyway Car Wash site on Raymond Boulevard. The longtime Newark company plans to hire several local workers for its first express-exterior location in the city, adding to its existing downtown and South Broad Street sites.
2. Newark City Budget Still Needs Final Vote, Already Several Months Late (patch.com) — Newark is heading into October without a finalized 2026 city budget, as negotiations with the state continue months past the usual deadline. City officials say the delay could mean an unusual tax scenario where some municipal and school taxes dip for homeowners, yet overall property tax bills still rise because of changing property values.
3. Graduation Rates Up For Newark Public Schools, Absenteeism Down (patch.com) — Newark families are seeing strong gains in local public schools, with the district's graduation rate climbing to a record 92 percent and four high schools reaching 100 percent. Chronic absenteeism has dropped across elementary, high, and specialized schools, helped by daily attendance monitoring, targeted outreach, and expanded support from principals, teachers, and attendance counselors.
4. Afterschool Assistant Program Leader (Multiple Vacancies) (rutgers.edu) — Rutgers University–Newark's Cornwall Center is hiring multiple part-time Afterschool Assistant Program Leaders to work on-site with 3rd to 8th graders in its Promise Youth University STEAM program. Newark-area residents with a high school diploma, a passion for youth, and cultural competence can earn $15.13 to $27 per hour while supporting academics, enrichment, and family engagement through grant-funded after-school programming.
5. NJPAC presents comedian Pete Holmes on January 14th (newjerseystage.com) — NJPAC in downtown Newark will host comedian and actor Pete Holmes for a stand-up show on Thursday, January 14, 2027, at 8 p.m. Tickets go on sale online starting Friday, October 2, giving Newark residents plenty of time to grab seats for a nationally known comic close to home.
