According to the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, uniformed officers from the Patrol Division were conducting quality of life operations on 14th Avenue in Irvington on Thursday when they saw a 2015 Ford Focus that was reported as carjacked at gunpoint out of Newark on Jan. 22.
During that incident, the victim was pistol-whipped, police said.

“Our officers followed the suspect vehicle and when the driver, Deondre Goyshay, 20, of Newark, saw our officers he sped away but crashed his vehicle at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Oak Street,” Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said. “Goyshay bailed out of the car and attempted to run from the scene. He was immediately captured and after a brief struggle, was placed under arrest.”
Goyshay had a ski mask with him at the time of his arrest; authorities said that two ski-masked suspects were involved in Monday’s carjacking.
