Authorities Investigate Deaths of Two Students in Newark

Flu-like symptoms possible cause of one fatality

Newark authorities are launching separate investigations into the deaths of two children in the Newark school district during the past week.

School administrators reported that the first child, a seventh-grader from the Luis Munoz Marin Middle School, died on Wednesday, March 4. The cause of death is still unknown, but is currently under investigation, according to the Newark Police Department.

In a separate incident, Newark school administrators reported that a first-grader from the Oliver Street School died on Thursday, March 5. The child was suffering from flu-like symptoms and had been out of school for 10 days, according to a report.

The school district stated that it is cleaning the student’s classroom as a precaution, and the Newark Health Department is investigating the incident.

The Newark Police and Health departments are declining further comment pending further investigation.
