Boat Fire Kills 2, Injures 1 In Newark; Investigation Continues

Two people died and a third victim was injured when a boat caught fire in Essex County, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — Two people died and a third victim was injured when a boat caught fire in Newark last weekend, authorities say.

The fire took place in an alleyway on the 20-block of Pennsy Place near Pershing Avenue around 8:45 p.m. on Friday, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Two adult women were trapped in the burning boat, which was on a trailer at the time. Both women were pronounced dead at University Hospital in Newark, authorities said.

A man who was also on the boat was transported to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. He is in stable condition, authorities said.

A nearby boat also caught fire, but it was unoccupied.

A police investigation into the deadly fire continues. The identities of the two deceased women have not been released, and the cause and origin of the blaze has not been determined, authorities said.
