Brazilian Day Newark Returns For 2024 On Labor Day Weekend

The popular two-day festival celebrates Brazilian culture with music, dancing, food and drinks. See local street closures in Newark.

NEWARK, NJ — A popular celebration of Brazilian Independence Day is returning to New Jersey’s largest city for 2024.

Brazilian Day Newark will be back on Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1, just in time for Labor Day weekend. Headliner Solange Almeida will be performing on Sunday evening. Learn more here.

“It is a cultural event that primarily celebrates the Brazilian Independence Day, it is a free open-air event for everyone, regardless of age, background and language, with all the positive things that comes to mind when you think about the Brazilian culture: great music, food and drinks, exciting music and dances. Brazilians barely needs any excuse to start a party and that’s what attracts everyone to this event.”

Celebrated since 1993, the Brazilian Day receives 50,000 visitors per day. People come as far as from New York, Washington D.C., Massachusetts, Connecticut and Pennsylvania for the festivities, organizers say.

Brazilian Day starts at noon and goes up to midnight. Early during the day, there will be children’s activities, carnival rides, live music and DJs on the stage.

STREET CLOSURES

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the following streets will be closed from 9 a.m. on Saturday to 11 p.m. on Sunday:

  • Niagara Street between Ferry Street and Hensler Street
  • Chambers Street between Ferry Street and Clover Street

Here are a few rules to keep in mind, officials said:

  • Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters, etc. are not permitted
  • Backpacks, large and small bags, coolers, carriages, etc. may be subject to search
  • Alcohol is not permitted

Drivers are being advised to anticipate delays and to plan alternate routes, officials said.
