Newark Rolls Out Road Barriers As Flood Threat Grows: See Locations

NEWARK, NJ — Newark continues to batten down the hatches ahead of a week of thunderstorms and potential flooding.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Flood Watch and a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Newark this week. Other towns in New Jersey are also expected to see heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

According to the NWS, several inches of rain are expected to fall between Monday night and Thursday. A regional Flood Watch began at 8 a.m. on Tuesday and last until 8 a.m. on Wednesday.

In Newark, public safety workers have been putting up road barriers on several streets that have been prone to flooding. Drivers are advised to anticipate delays and to plan alternate routes.

Barriers have been erected at the following locations:

• Meeker Avenue between Elizabeth Avenue and Empire Street
• McClellan Street between Frelinghuysen Avenue and Garibaldi Avenue
• Wilson Avenue between Avenue P and Margarita Drive
• South Street between Bridge Street and Adams Street
• Frelinghuysen Avenue between East Peddie Street and Empire Street

Earlier this week, Newark authorities warned that there are several other roads in the city that have seen flooding in the past. The list includes:

• Clay Street and McCarter Highway
• South Street and Van Buren Street
• Jefferson and Chestnut Streets
• State Street near Broad Street
• Jabez and Backus Streets
• 357 Wilson Avenue
• Manufacturers Place and Hyatt Street
• Magazine Street and Avenue L
• Magazine Street and Amsterdam Street
• Raymond Boulevard and Blanchard Street
• Avenue L and Wilson Avenue
• Wilson Avenue and Avenue K
• Mary Street and Avenue L
• Ferry and Foundry Streets
• Hyatt Avenue and Wilson Avenue
• South Street and Adams Street
• South Street and Pulaski Street
• South Street and Pacific Street
• South Street and Dawson Street
• Pacific Street and Calumet Street
• Pulaski Street and Clifford Street
• Jefferson Street and Clifford Street
• Van Buren Street and Clifford Street
• Foundry Street and Roanoke Avenue
• Foundry Street and Avenue P
• Norfolk Street
• Orange Street
• Nesbitt Street
• McClellan Street and Runiak Avenue
