Car Hits, Kills Newark Woman, 35, Near Broadway and Third Avenue: Police

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark driver struck and killed a city resident near Broadway and Third Avenue on Thursday evening, authorities say.

The pedestrian-car crash took place around 6:45 p.m. when an 87-year-old woman from Newark in a 2000 Hyundai Sonata struck Tamara Campbell, 35, of Newark, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.

The driver also hit two utility poles, a traffic control box, a tree, a fence and a parked car during the crash, authorities said.

Emergency responders transported Campbell to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:43 p.m. on Thursday.

At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver, who remained at the scene following the incident, police said.

The Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force are investigating the incident, authorities stated.
