Dozens Of Newark Girls Get Career Mentorship At Women's History Month Event

Students had the opportunity to speak with successful professionals, including a recording artist, a police detective and an attorney.

NEWARK, NJ — More than 80 eighth-grade girls in Newark recently celebrated Women’s History Month by planning for their future careers.

The “Her Path, Her Power: Exploring Careers & Legacies” event at KIPP New Jersey brought students together with local female professionals representing a variety of career paths, including health care, education, fashion, music, entrepreneurship, law and business.

Students had the opportunity to speak with a recording artist, a police detective, and an attorney. The room was filled with joy and positivity as students held mirrors up and recited affirmations, encouraging each other.

“When girls have the opportunity to sit across from women who have navigated different careers, overcome challenges, and built meaningful lives, it makes those pathways feel real and attainable,” said Salihah Salaam, school psychologist and event host.

“Our goal is for every student to walk away believing that their voice, their ambition, and their dreams matter,” Salaam said.
