East Orange Pastor In Hospital After Bullets Rip Through Newark Home
A police search continues after a church pastor was shot in Essex County. A vigil is planned for the wounded clergy member.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A police search continues for the person who shot a church pastor in Essex County last week. Meanwhile, Newark and East Orange community members are coming together on his family’s behalf, including the launch of a fundraiser in the clergy member’s name.
One of multiple bullets fired into Timothy Huff’s home on Fourth Street in Newark around 2 a.m. on Thursday struck him in his chest, shattering his sternum, puncturing his lung, and damaging his kidney and heart, his family said in a GoFundMe campaign. Learn more or make a donation here.
Huff, a pastor at Green Pasture Missionary Baptist Church in East Orange, is a “well-known philanthropist and a loved husband, father, grandfather and brother,” his family says.

The bullets went through the living room wall and hit Huff in the chest while he was sitting on the couch, ABC 7 News reported.
Delois Hudson-Huff, who is married to the wounded pastor, said he used his body to protect her when the bullets started flying, CBS New York reported.

Prior to the shooting, a group of young women damaged a car belonging to one of the pastor’s sons, his family said. The shooting was captured by a nearby surveillance camera, which showed two young women at the scene. One of them can be seen firing a weapon before running away, News 12 New Jersey reported.
Huff remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit at University Hospital in Newark, TAPintoNewark reported Tuesday.
A prayer vigil is scheduled to take place outside Green Pasture Missionary Baptist Church at 50 North Maple Avenue in Easte Orange at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 31.
