Enrollment Still Open for Newark Preschool Council Head Start and Early Head Start Programs Throughout City of Newark

Newark Preschool
Council, Inc. is conducting open enrollment for the free Head Start and Early
Head Start Programs throughout the City of Newark. Head Start is a federally funded
comprehensive preschool and family support program provided at no charge to low
income families and other families that meet Head Start eligibility criteria. Families
with children birth-5 years old can register at any of our 37 centers and 11
collaborations partners by calling 973-848-5090. Classes begin September 5.
Newark Preschool Council is a premier Head Start program and the largest in New
Jersey and serves families residing in Newark. Eligible families are those that qualify by
income at the poverty level or have children with disabilities. The program offers developmental and educational services
for pregnant moms, babies, toddlers, preschoolers and their families who live
in poverty and struggle to meet the basic needs of life. Ten per cent of
children enrolled may be over income.
Parents
working or attending school, especially, can benefit from the many services
Newark Preschool Council Head Start offers the entire family. Head Start helps
the child's ability to think, reason, speak, get along with others and prepare
for success in Kindergarten. At the same time, the Head Start program works
with families to help themselves.
Parents are
asked to provide the following at the time of the application meeting: child's
birth certificate, income verification, current medical card, social security
card, up-to-date immunization records for the child, as well as current
physical and dental examination records or appointment dates for these exams.
Head Start classes begin in the first week in September. Since classes must be full
by orientation time in August, enrollment will be closed as soon as enough
eligible families have completed enrollment. Therefore, it is very important
that any family with low income, in school or working contact Newark Preschool
Council as soon as possible to complete enrollment. Newark Preschool Council staff is
multicultural and will make home visits to help parents complete their
application in their own language, if needed.
