Essex County College's Newark Campus Evacuated, ‘Suspicious Package’ Declared Safe
A "suspicious package" caused a temporary evacuation at the Newark campus of Essex County College, authorities say.

NEWARK, NJ — Authorities conducted a temporary evacuation of Essex County College’s Newark campus on Monday after a “suspicious package” was found.
“The Newark Main Campus has been evacuated until further notice,” college administrators posted on social media around 11:30 a.m. “The college police department in cooperation with the Sheriff's Department is investigating a suspicious package. An update will be provided shortly. We appreciate your cooperation.”

College administrators issued an updated statement shortly after noon.
"Essex County College appreciates your cooperation during our temporary evacuation. The college has since been cleared for staff and students to return to the building. The college is now operating as normal."
