Some Made Lemonade: The Art of Gladys Barker Grauer

In 1972, Gladys opened the Aard Studio Gallery in Newark’s South Ward. Through her community-based art gallery, she helped launch the careers and critical evaluation of numerous artists of color. Over the past 60 years, Gladys’ artwork has been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally -- from The Newark Museum to Dakar, Senegal.

Mrs. Grauer has created a unique technique of creating art with discarded materials. Plastic bags are woven into fabric and painted. These materials can be found in Grauer’s exhibit at WBGO. “Plastic bags are often used as garments by the homeless and corrugated boxes are sometimes used for shelter,” says Hilton. “The show is called Some Made Lemonade because it is about making something great and functional out of a little bit of nothing.”

Grauer’s work will be on display in the WBGO Gallery April 8 through June 9, 2011. The WBGO Gallery is located at 54 Park Place in Newark, New Jersey.
