Building on his earlier talk about the founding of Newark, Tim Crist will discuss events leading up to the founding of the College of New Jersey (later to become Princeton University), which was located in Newark for nine years before moving to Princeton. It was a time of intense religious revivals, violent disputes about land, and deep anxiety about war. Dr. Crist, who earned his PhD in history at Cambridge University, is president of the Newark History Society.

Tim will discuss Aaron Burr, Sr.'s role as president of The College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) during the nine formative years when the college was located in Newark before its move to Princeton in late 1756. He will also explore Newark's place in the larger issues of the day -- land riots, religious revivals, and preparations for war with the French — and touch on the daily life of Newarkers as seen through the journals of Esther Edwards Burr.
Tim has a special interest in Newark’s early history. He last spoke to us about the intertwining of religion and civil society in his 2009 talk, “Godly Government: Puritans and the Founding of Newark.”
This program is open to the public at no charge. Light refreshments will be available. Please RSVP by September 15 by email (NewarkHistorySociety@verizon.net) or by calling 973.376.8273.
