Fiery Manholes Shut Down Streets In Newark, Repairs Underway

Underground electrical fires took place at nearly a dozen manholes in Newark. Some traffic lights were affected; no buildings lost power.

NEWARK, NJ — Fire was seen emanating from nearly a dozen manholes in Newark on Tuesday morning, forcing the closure of several nearby streets, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety:

“At approximately 5:50 a.m., Newark firefighters responded to McCarter Highway and Edison Place on calls of fire emanating from manholes. Some 12 manholes were affected in the southbound direction of McCarter Highway. Some traffic lights were also affected, but no power was lost to buildings in the area. All fires are now considered under control.”

PSE&G is carrying out underground electrical repairs, Newark authorities said. Streets have been temporarily closed at McCarter Highway from Lafayette Street to Market Street.
