Fire Spotted Near Newark Airport, Videos Show Smoke Billowing Into Sky (UPDATED)

Footage of the smoke has been circulating online, with several people sharing video clips and photos.

NEWARK, NJ — A large cloud of smoke was seen billowing from a fire in the Newark Airport area on Thursday.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey issued an alert about an off-site fire near Port Street in Newark at 2:46 p.m.

“Please exercise caution when travelling in and out of the port and surrounding roadways,” authorities said.

"Outer Port Street is closed in both directions due to [fire department] activity," Port Authority officials announced in an update shortly afterwards.

All traffic is being rerouted through Doremus Avenue, authorities said.

A spokesperson for the Newark Department of Public Safety told Patch that firefighters responded to a fire at 635 Delancy Street at 2:48 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the flames had extended to an occupied building. Everyone inside at the time self-evacuated, and nobody was injured, authorities said.

Firefighters called a second alarm at 2:49 p.m. The blaze was eventually put under control at 4:32 p.m.

The Newark Department of Public Safety’s arson unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.

“Anyone know what’s happening?” an X user commented, adding that the smoke doesn’t seem to be coming from the airport itself – but somewhere nearby.

“Fire near Newark Airport, anyone know what it is?” another person commented.
