Girl Killed In Newark Hit-And-Run; $10K Reward To Catch Driver: Police

A car hit a father and his two young children as they were crossing the street in Newark. The driver kept going, authorities said.

NEWARK, NJ — The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward to help catch the person who killed a child in a hit-and-run crash in Newark earlier this week.

A “vehicle-pedestrian collision” caused the death of a 5-year-old girl on Tuesday evening. The collision also injured her father and sister, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, which released the following statement about the death:

“On January 31, at 6:44 p.m., Newark police notified the Essex County Prosecutor’s Crime Scene Investigations Bureau of a vehicle-pedestrian collision at the intersection of 6th Avenue and North 9th Street. The girl was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m. Her father and younger sister were taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to a statement from Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura, the collision took place while the father was carrying the 5-year-old child in his arms and holding his 2-year-old’s hand as they crossed the street.

The car hit all of them and the driver kept going, Fontoura said.

On Thursday, authorities announced that the Essex County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible for the fatal hit-and-run.
