HBCU Scholarship Ride Helps Newark Students Chase College Dreams

An annual fundraising campaign helps Newark students to attend a Historically Black College or University.

NEWARK, NJ — An inspiring local initiative continues to make an impact on the Newark community: the HBCU Scholarship Ride.

The HBCU Scholarship Ride helps bridge the gap between a deserving student’s dream of attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and their ability to afford it.

The annual campaign was born in 2020 at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, when a group of friends came together to make a bicycle journey from Newark to Howard University in Washington D.C.

The ride – made in support of an incoming first year student who was having trouble paying for tuition – ended up raising $6,500 for her education, according to Hassan Abdus-Sabur, who huffed and puffed through four states and “unforgiving highways” along with his buddies.
