Holiday Stabbing, Shooting Suspects Sought In Newark: Police

A stabbing and gunfire took place in Newark on New Year's Day. Police continue to search for the suspects, authorities said Wednesday.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police continue to search for the suspects in a stabbing and an outburst of gunfire that took place on New Year’s Day, authorities said Wednesday.

The Newark Department of Public Safety released details about two separate incidents that took place in the city on Jan. 1. Investigations into both incidents continue, police said.

ASSAULT, STABBING

The first incident took place around 1:23 a.m. as the victim was walking in the area of Ferry Street and Polk Street, and three men approached him, authorities said.

Here’s what happened next, police said:

“One suspect placed the victim in a chokehold while the other two searched the victim’s pockets, stealing his wallet and taking his cell phone from his hand. The victim whistled for help and the suspects stabbed him before fleeing into a black sedan parked on the Polk Street side of the 200-block of Ferry Street.”

The victim is reportedly in stable condition, authorities said Wednesday.

Police released photos of one suspect, who was captured on surveillance video stabbing the victim while he was on the ground, authorities said (see below).

GUNSHOTS FIRED

In a separate incident, gunshots were fired in the city around 4 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Here’s what happened, according to Newark police:

“At approximately 4:05 a.m., police responded to University Avenue and Campbell Street on a call of a shooting. Responding officers did not locate any victims, but found ballistic evidence of four spent 9mm cartridges and one live round in the area.”

Detectives investigating this incident are seeking the public’s help identifying a suspect in the incident (see photos below).

According to Newark police the male suspect is approximately 5 feet 10 inches and 175 pounds, with a dark skin complexion. He was wearing a military fatigue vest with a security badge affixed to his lapel.

The suspect fled the scene in a black, four-door BMW, police noted.
