Immigrants Make Up 29 Percent Of Newark’s Population: Report

Immigrants make up 29 percent of Newark's population, a recent report says. The totals in East Newark are even higher.

NEWARK, NJ — New Jersey has a long history of immigrants coming to the Garden State in search of a better life for themselves and their families. And according to recent reports, the Newark area may have some of the most immigrants in the state.

A survey by NJ101.5 recently mapped out the percentages and numbers of immigrants in each New Jersey town, basing their data on U.S. Census estimates. Newark has 81,187 immigrants living in the city, about 29 percent of its population. About 59 percent of East Newark’s population is composed of immigrants, according to NJ101.5.

Meanwhile, a recent NJ Spotlight report claimed that Essex County as a whole has the most pending immigration cases in the state. Read the full report here.

With 4,950 pending cases, Essex County outpaces the next-highest county, Union, which has 4,122 pending cases, according to data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University.
