Jet With 'Smoke In Cockpit' Lands At Newark Airport

A scary incident involving a plane happened Friday in Newark.

A 737 jet with smoke in its cockpit had to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Friday, according to the Port Authority.

The United Airlines jet 1048 landed "without incident" shortly after the the report was made at 8:21 a.m., according to the Port Authority. The jet landed at 8:31 a.m.

The United Airlines jet was headed for Cancun, Mexico, and returned to Newark shortly after takeoff because of a maintenance issue, according to the airline.

The flight landed safely and taxied to a gate. "Our customers are boarding a new aircraft and will depart on a flight two hours later than their scheduled departure," according to the airline. "We apologize to our customers for the delay."
