Large Fire In Newark Rips Through 3-Story Building, Dozens Displaced

NEWARK, NJ — Dozens of people were forced out of their homes and a firefighter suffered minor burns after a three-alarm fire tore through a mixed-use building in Newark on Monday, authorities said.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, firefighters responded to a three-story building at 576 Broadway at 6:59 p.m. to find “heavy fire” on the roof of the property. The flames eventually spread to nearby buildings, including a liquor store with apartments above it and a food store, also with apartments above it.
Firefighters put the blaze under control at 10:10 p.m., authorities said.

A Newark firefighter suffered minor burns to his neck and chest, but remained on duty. No other injuries were reported, authorities said.
Public safety officials said 31 adults and eight children have been relocated due to the damage.

The Newark Department of Public Safety’s arson unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire, authorities said Tuesday.
Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from East Orange, Millburn, Montclair, Bloomfield, Belleville and South Essex.
The blaze on Broadway was the second large fire that took place in Newark on Monday. A separate fire at a three-story residential building on South 13th Street left six families without a home, authorities reported. See Related: 6 Families Displaced After Fire At Newark Residential Building
