Locked up in America: The Business of Incarceration

Explore three major aspects of the U.S. prison system: the school-to-prison pipeline, the consequences and overuse of solitary confinement.

With the highest documented incarceration rate in the world, the federal prison system in the United States is a multi-billion dollar private industry that is under fire from human rights groups for alleged abuses at every level. This year’s Human Rights Institute conference at Kean University, titled Locked up in America: The Business of Incarceration, will explore three major aspects of the U.S. prison system: the school-to-prison pipeline, the consequences and overuse of solitary confinement, and the profiteers behind it all.

Open to the public, the conference will be held on April 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Wilkins Theatre on Kean’s Union campus. On-site check-in begins at 8 a.m. Educators are encouraged to bring their students. Admission is free with online registration: www.kean.edu/humanrightsconference.
