Longtime Newark City Councilman Won’t Run Again This Year, He Says
Carlos Gonzalez offered an endorsement for his at-large seat on the council – here's who he named.

NEWARK, NJ — A longtime Newark city councilman won’t be running for office again this year, he announced this week.
Carlos Gonzalez, an at-large member of the Newark City Council, announced on social media that he is not pursuing re-election in the May municipal election.
“Time has come to retire and enjoy the fruits of our long years of labor,” he wrote. “I had a very rewarding experience being your representative at the City of Newark Municipal Council.

Gonzalez said he is endorsing Newark Board of Education member Josephine Garcia for one of four at-large seats on the council.
Gonzalez, 76, first assumed office in 2006. His current term ends on June 30, 2026.

Gonzalez’s latest announcement is an about-face from an earlier post on social media, when he picked up petitions to run for the council in January – reporting that he was “fired up” for the road ahead.
According to the municipal website, Gonzalez has a background in finance and law.
