One man has died in a police shooting that happened in New Jersey on Tuesday, authorities said.

One man has died in a police shooting that happened in New Jersey on Tuesday, authorities said.

The incident took place at approximately 9:15 p.m. in the area of South Orange Avenue and South 17th Street in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

Detectives from the Department’s Major Crimes Division were patrolling in the area of South Orange Avenue for shootings and robberies approached a suspected vehicle.

As officers approached, they observed one of the occupants armed with a gun prompting a detective to fire his weapon, striking the armed suspect after which police recovered the suspect’s weapon. EMS transported the man to University Hospital where he died a short time later, according to RLS Media.

The incident is under investigation.
