Man Robbed Business, Family Barbecue In Newark: Police

Newark police are asking for help identifying a suspect in two armed robberies that recently happened in the city.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark police are asking for help identifying a suspect in two armed robberies that recently happened in the city.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, both robberies took place on May 26. Police released the following details about each incident:

BUSINESS ROBBERY – “The first robbery occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at a business on the 500-block of Central Avenue. A male patron inside the establishment was approached by the suspect who entered, brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s necklace at gunpoint.”

ROBBERY AT BARBECUE – “The second robbery occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. on the 200-block of South 10th Street, where the victims were barbecuing with a group of family members and friends. The suspect, who had earlier passed by the barbecue and observed the event, returned, brandishing a firearm and demanding the belongings of two male victims. Two necklaces and a bracelet, with a total value of $8,500, were stolen from the first victim, and a wallet containing $30 and a bank debit card was stolen from the second victim.”

Detectives investigating this incident described the suspect as a male about 6 feet and 170 pounds, who speaks with an accent. The suspect was wearing a black hooded North Face jacket, a ski mask, black pants and white Jordan sneakers. He was seen riding a black bicycle with a distinctive red attachment on its frame, police said (see photos below).
