Man Stabbed In Essex County Hotel On Labor Day: Police

Prior to the stabbing, a woman accompanied the injured man to his hotel room and stole cash from his wallet, police said.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Police arrested a woman at an Essex County hotel on Labor Day after she allegedly stabbed a man and stole cash from his wallet after accompanying him to his room, authorities say.

Police officers responded to the Riviera Hotel at 169 Clinton Avenue in Newark around 9 p.m. on Monday after receiving a call about an injured person. On arrival, the officers found a 49-year-old male suffering from a stab wound, the Newark Department of Public Safety stated.

Emergency responders transported the injured man to University Hospital for treatment, authorities said.

During a subsequent investigation, detectives determined that prior to the stabbing, a female suspect accompanied the injured man to his hotel room and stole cash from his wallet, police said.

The woman, Cearita Pendelton, 46, of Newark, allegedly stabbed the male after a struggle ensued, police stated.

Newark police arrested Pendelton on Tuesday and charged her with Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Robbery. She was also charged with Contempt of Court regarding an outstanding warrant.
