Massive Union Campaign Kicks Off Labor Day In Newark, NJ
32BJ SEIU is trying to bargain better contracts for 7,000 cleaners and janitors in NJ. A rally/march will take place in Newark on Sept. 2.
NEWARK, NJ — Labor union 32BJ SEIU has announced plans to kick off a massive contract campaign for building service workers across the nation on Labor Day 2019, a holiday meant to “pay tribute to working people.”
According to 32BJ SEIU, the campaign will include bargaining stronger contracts for 7,000 cleaners and janitors in New Jersey this year.
The workers’ contracts are set to expire on Dec. 31. Bargaining will start in the next few months, union spokespeople said.

32BJ SEIU stated:
“As working people face a host of challenges— attacks on immigrants, unaffordable healthcare, low wages and diminishing rights on the job— 32BJ has a proven record of winning for working families. 32BJ has won a $15/hour minimum wage, anti-wage theft legislation, paid family leave and historically high wages for airport workers. The union, alongside respected elected officials and community allies, will channel their success to rally for a strong contract fight for 2020.”
To kick off the campaign, 32BJ SEIU members will hold a Labor Day mass, march and rally on Monday, Sept. 2 in Newark, New Jersey. (Learn more about this local event)
