Newark Public Schools Announce 2013 Summer Programs
Among a wide range of offerings: enrichment sessions, sports camps, arts and theater programs, special education and ESL classes.

The 2012-13 school year is almost over, which means it's time for summer school.
Newark Public Schools' hot-weather programs start July 8 and run through Aug. 9, with some extending until Aug. 26.
A district statement included a message to parents, "strongly" encouraging them "to ensure their children attend summer classes."
Students in kindergarten through seventh grade attend enrichment programs for three hours a day at various school sites. Classes feature academic activities that include literacy institutes and math camps, and breakfast and lunch are provided. The elementary school sessions run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
For high schoolers, Newark Schools offer accelerated courses, a credit recovery program, the High School Proficiency Assessment Academy and the Career and Technical Education program. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Summer high school sessions operate from 7:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
Enrichment programs geared to special needs students and an English as a Second Language program will also be offered over the summer. Additionally, for students interested in the arts and/or athletics, the district offers the Summer Arts Festival and the Sports Camp. Sessions will feature instruction and activities that focus on dance, music, theater and visual arts skills and a variety of sports at designated high school locations. The Sports Camps and Clinics include basketball, football, golf, lacrosse, tennis, track, softball, team captains and leaders training and volleyball.
Newark Schools also present its afternoon Summer Youth Development Program. At various school sites and city parks, students ages seven and up can participate in activities including academics, recreation and personal development between 12:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
