Newark Apartment Building Raided For Code Violations

Alleged issues include rats, mold, leaking sewage and an unlicensed food store on the ground floor.

Newark city code officials raided a housing apartment on First Street on Tuesday, discovering a medley of health and safety code violations that included rat infestations, mold and broken walls.

When code officials entered the Garden Spires – a 550-unit Section 8 housing complex – they went door to door and took complaints from hundreds of residents.

  • Mouse and rat droppings
  • A pipe leaking sewage water
  • An unlicensed food store on the ground floor that sold rotten food and attracted vermin
  • Broken faucets
  • Black mold covering the walls
  • Poor hallway lighting
  • Toilets that won’t flush

According to NJ.com, city officials will ask the property’s manager – King Properties – to pay for the temporary location of those residents whose apartments are determined to be uninhabitable.

The company may be liable for up to $50,000 in fines, NJ.com reported.
