Here’s what to know about the building and mural:
“Essex Plaza was included in The Lincoln Park Historic District listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Essex Plaza, a 451‐unit apartment building for the poor and elderly seniors located at 1060 Broad Street, once was once an eight‐story Federal office building ("The Industrial Office Building"). Essex Plaza touches the Central and East Wards in the City of Newark, NJ. The ‘Historic Essex Plaza Lobby Mural’ should effuse the rich historical spirit of the community, of the building itself, its occupants and resilient spirits of the City of Newark. Inspiration can be drawn from the past, present or future vision of Essex Plaza which fits seamlessly within the Lincoln Park neighborhood being an arts district.”
The deadline for submissions is Monday, Oct. 16 at 11:59 p.m. The selected muralist will be notified on Oct. 24 and announced by Oct. 27.
