Newark Cooking Classes Will Promote African-American Heritage, Healthy Choices

The Newark cooking classes will showcase the rich history and healthy roots of African culture, organizers say.

NEWARK, NJ — Diabetes, obesity and heart disease are not part of African-American heritage. That’s the message that international food and nutrition nonprofit Oldways aims to bring to Newark during its upcoming “A Taste of African Heritage” community cooking classes.

Starting April 13, the six-week classes take place at the Feldman Middleton Jr. Community Center in Essex County Weequahic Park, 92 Thomas Carmichael Drive, Newark. There is a maximum of 15 participants, with Newark residents given priority. Pre-registration is required.

Classes take place on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. The first session takes place in April (April 13 and 15; April 20 and 22; April 27 and 29). The second session is in July (July 13 and 15; July 20 and 22; July 27 and 29).

“The cooking classes showcase the rich history and healthy roots of African culture and traditional cuisine while instilling cooking confidence, basic skills, and enjoyment as motivators for preparing regular home-cooked meals as part of a healthy lifestyle,” said Sade Anderson, Oldways' African heritage and health program manager and African diaspora specialist.
