NJ Cop Buys New Bike For Boy Hurt In Hit-And-Run

NEWARK, NJ — When Newark police officers showed up at D’Andrea Ferguson’s home carrying a new bicycle, it gave her a shock – in a good way.

In January, her 9-year-old son, Michael Copeland, was riding his bike when a car struck him from behind, knocking him to the ground. The “hit-and-run accident” left the youth with a concussion; a police investigation continues, authorities said Wednesday.

Sadly, his bike was damaged in the crash, too. It didn’t sit right with Newark Police Sgt. J. Dopazo, who reached into his own pocket to buy a new bicycle and helmet.

Along with some peers on the force, Dopazo paid Ferguson and her son a visit this week, showing up on her doorstep with the new set of wheels.

“It shocked me,’’ Ferguson said. “I didn’t know that they do stuff like that … I thought it was really nice.”

The 9-year-old couldn’t stop smiling when he saw his surprise gift, giving Dopazo a big hug to say thanks. And from what he told officers, his experience apparently hasn’t dampened his adventurous spirit and plans for the spring weather. “I like to do wheelies and ride fast down hills,” he explained.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said he was “touched by this and so many countless other acts of love for our community” from local police and firefighters.

“Makes me proud to be part of the Newark Public Safety Department,” O’Hara said.
