Newark, NJ - Newark Mayor Ras Baraka issued the following statement on Monday, June 6:
"As the holy month of Ramadan begins, on behalf of the people of Newark, New Jersey, I send our best wishes to Muslims in Newark, across the United States and around the world.
"Ramadan is an opportunity to focus on reflection and spiritual growth, forgiveness, compassion for the displaced and disenfranchised, and on the unity of all peoples. In America, we have Muslim communities as diverse as our nation itself. The history of some Muslims in America can be traced back to before the Revolutionary War, while others have only recently arrived.

"On the occasion of this holy month, all Americans must re-dedicate ourselves to the truth that we are one American family. Newark stands with all Muslim American communities in rejecting the voices that seek to divide us or limit our religious freedoms or civil rights for their own selfish reasons. We stand committed to safeguarding the civil rights of all Americans no matter their religion or appearance. We stand in celebration of our common humanity and dedication to peace and justice for all.
"As Ramadan begins, we cannot forget the millions of lives that have been lost or displaced by conflict and struggle around the world. Too many persons of the Islamic faith cannot observe Ramadan in their own homes this year. We must continue working together to end the war and suffering. We must continue to welcome immigrants and refugees into our nation, and make no exception for those who are Muslim."
