Newark Obituary: Jose Vara Fernandez, Enterprising Spanish Immigrant

The former Newark resident was well-known on Green Street.

Newark resident Jose Vara Fernandez passed away on Nov. 24.

He was 84-years-old.

“Jose Vara Fernandez 84, of Edison died on Tuesday November 24, 2015 at JFK Medical Center in Edison.

“Jose Vara Fernandez was born in Muros La Coruña Spain decided to come to the USA via boat to Baltimore. Jumped ship and learned 2 words to keep him full morning afternoon and night which were Ham & Eggs. Came to Newark, NJ by train and there he married Amparo Rodriguez who then had 3 children: Joe Fernandez, Manny Fernandez & Otilia Fernandez then he hung his hat and became a legendary Man by helping his people & others with jobs, a place to live and always inherited other’s problems, BUT never said no-- always helped. Was a great Entrepreneur from restaurants, bars, fishing boats, construction, landlord in Ironbound, etc etc. His passions were family, friends, and always a good game of Knock Rum. GREEN ST Of Newark in today’s Ironbound will never be the same. He will be missed God bless you Jose Vara Fernandez RIP.

“Jose was married to his wife Amparo (nee Rodriguez) and is the father of Joe Fernandez and his wife Donna, Otilia Duggan and her husband Gene, and the late Manuel Fernandez. He is the brother of Ramon, Manuel, Manuela, and the late Andres Vara. He is also the grandfather of Nicole, Jessica, Christina, Carlos, and Marissa, and the great grandfather of Brian Joseph, as well the uncle of Manny and Josephine Rodriguez, Manny and Lisa Vara, and Pepe and Juan Penela.”
