Newark Parking Tax Hike Will Pay For Shelter, Bridge: Report
Newark will pay for a homeless shelter and a pedestrian bridge with a parking tax hike on people who don't live in the city, a report says.
NEWARK, NJ — Newark plans to pay for a new homeless shelter and a pedestrian bridge with an extra parking tax on people who don’t live in the city, a report says.
The Newark City Council approved a 3.5 percent hike to the city’s 15 percent tax for short and long-term parking in March. Newark residents will be able to obtain rebates on the new tax, NJ.com reported.
The funds will pay for a 150-bed homeless shelter, which the city will own but a different entity will run, and 100 units of transitional housing. The money will also pay to build a pedestrian bridge that will span Route 21 and connect Newark Penn Station to the Ironbound section of the city, NJ.com reported. Read the full article.
