Newark Police Director, Chief to be Sworn in Thursday

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio and will take their oaths of office Thursday afternoon at New Hope Baptist Church, according to city officials.
DeMaio when city council unanimously OK'd his post. He had been acting director for three months since May when then-Police Director Garry McCarthy left to become Chicago's police superintendent.
Coley after council voted 9-0 to re-instate the police chief job. After the vote, Deputy City Clerk Kenneth Lewis read aloud a letter from Newark Mayor Cory Booker to council that named Coley to the job.

The council had abolished the police chief post in 2008 after an ongoing battle for power between then-Police Chief Anthony Campos and McCarthy. Campos now is deputy chief of operations.
Coley is acting chief until she is sworn in Thursday.
