Newark Police Report Several Arrests: Shooting, Gun Incidents
Newark police released details about several incidents involving guns – and the arrests that followed.
NEWARK, NJ — Newark police have released details about multiple assaults involving guns that took place in the city – and the arrests that followed.
“Working to reduce violence is a top priority for Newark police,” Newark Public Safety Director Brian O’Hara said last week.
“I commend our officers for their commitment to apprehending shooting suspects and to removing illegal firearms from our streets,” O’Hara said. “We are also tremendously grateful for the community’s invaluable partnership in immediately reporting people seen in possession of guns in their neighborhoods.”

“So far this year, we show a 51 percent increase in weapon possession arrests and a 36 percent increase in firearms recovered when compared to the same period last year,” O’Hara said. “We applaud the community for helping us to achieve these results.”

Anonymous tips can also be made using the police division’s website at https://npd.newarkpublicsafety.org or through its smartphone app.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the following arrests were recently reported in the city.
MALE VICTIM SHOT
Deion Brison, 26, of Ewing, was arrested in connection with a shooting that took place on March 16.
Newark police said:
“At approximately 4 p.m., police responded to the area of Lyons Avenue near Bergen Street on a call of shots fired. Responding officers located a male victim who had been shot. The victim was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition.”
Police continued:
“Concerned community members reported seeing a male running through residents’ yards and dropping belongings in the area. Officers located Brison on Goldsmith Avenue and recovered a loaded handgun on Pomona Avenue. He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose.”
GUN POINTED INSIDE EXPRESS LAUNDRY
In a separate incident, Daniel Molloy, 48, of Newark, was arrested after he allegedly pointed a firearm at workers inside Express Laundry on Broad Street at 6:15 p.m. on March 16, authorities said.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety:
“Police identified Molloy as a resident of the Rivera Hotel at 169 Clinton Avenue. Police obtained a search warrant of Molloy’s residence and recovered a replica handgun. Molloy was arrested without incident. He is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and unlawful possession of other weapons.”
GUN RECOVERED AFTER CHASE
Newark police said James Mitchell, 23, of Irvington, was arrested in another incident on March 16 after police patrolling the area of 18th Avenue and Melrose Avenue observed him with a firearm at 9 p.m.
Police stated:
“Upon becoming aware of police presence, Mitchell ran. Community members reported seeing Mitchell running and dropping items on the 800-block of 18th Avenue. After a brief foot pursuit, he was apprehended and police recovered a loaded handgun where he was seen dropping items.”
Mitchell was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and obstruction of the administration of the law.
HANDGUN IN PLAIN VIEW
Another incident involving a gun took place on March 16, police said.
According to the Newark Newark Department of Public Safety:
“Officers investigating shots fired located a black Infiniti parked on Melrose Avenue just north of 18th Avenue with a handgun in plain view. The weapon was safely recovered along with marijuana found inside the vehicle. This incident remains under investigation.”
