Newark’s HotDogLady Inspires ‘Ujamaa’ In Her Community

South Ward SID: With the opening of her new truck, Newark's HotDogLady is a living example of the spirit of "cooperative economics."

NEWARK, NJ — The newly opened HotDogLady truck at Bergen Street and Madison Avenue has some seriously tasty eats. But its proprietor is also dispensing something much more valuable to the Newark community, according to the South Ward SID: “ujamaa.”

On the fourth day of Kwanzaa, which takes place from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 this year, the South Ward SID paid tribute to the concept of ujamaa, or cooperative economics. And this important idea – a community should build its own local businesses, control its own economics and share in the work and wealth – is exemplified in the HotDogLady, Executive Director Ronice Bruce said.

The local business recently celebrated a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new truck, which is stationed at Bergen Street and Madison Avenue. (Learn more here)
