Newark’s Latest ‘Blue Ribbon’ School Earns Prestigious Award For 2023

NEWARK, NJ — A high school in Newark has earned a prestigious national “Blue Ribbon” award for 2023, officials announced Tuesday.

According to the New Jersey Department of Education, nine schools in the state earned awards this year from the National Blue Ribbon Schools program, which recognizes outstanding schools based for their “overall high academic achievement” or “success in closing the achievement gap among diverse groups of students.”

The honored schools include Technology High School in Newark, which serves about 700 students and employs 54 teachers.

According to the Blue Ribbon schools website, Technology High School’s vision is to “develop global leaders by providing them with the tools to succeed in a world driven by technology.” The school’s academic program focuses on math and applied sciences, offering career pathways in computer science, Cisco cyber security, bio-medical sciences, engineering, video technology, and graphic print technology. Additionally, students are exposed to programs in mathematics and the humanities.

Students at Technology High School have “achieved exceptional results” in standardized tests, consistently scoring above the state average. Additionally, the school’s graduation rate is an impressive 99 percent.

“Receiving the Blue Ribbon School Award is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of our students, staff, parents, and the entire school community,” principal Edwin Reyes said.

“We are committed to providing a world-class education that prepares our students for a bright future in an ever-evolving technological landscape,” Reyes said.

Technology High School joins a growing list of Blue Ribbon Schools recipients in Newark, which also includes Ann Street School, Harriet Tubman School, Branch Brook School and Science Park High School.

Superintendent Roger León congratulated the school’s staff, administrators and students for the impressive achievement.

“Technology High School's dedication to creating a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment has earned the school this esteemed accolade,” León said.

“I am extremely proud of principal Edwin Reyes, the school’s administration, teachers, and staff for their commitment, unwavering dedication, and tireless efforts in supporting and inspiring our students,” the superintendent added. “The students at Technology High School and their families are an example of the greatness of Newark.”

  • Monmouth County Vocational School District - High Technology High School
  • Mendham Borough School District - Hilltop School
  • Bernards Township School District - Oak Street School
  • Charter Schools - Princeton Charter School
