Newark Schools Hold Voter Registration Day For 1000 Students

NEWARK, NJ — When the mid-term elections arrive on Nov. 6, there may be up to 1,000 extra teenage voters in Newark, thanks to a school “Voter Registration Day.”

On Thursday, the Newark Public School District plan to hold a lesson in real world civics with its Voter Registration Day for high school seniors. As part of the initiative, administrators will host an assembly for eligible students from Barringer, Science Park, Arts, Technology High, East Side, West Side, Shabazz, Weequahic, American History, Bard Early, Eagle Academy, University, UPLIFT Academy and Central high schools.

More than 1,000 students in the district are expected to turn 18 by the cutoff date for voting in the 2018 General Election, school officials said.

“It is our duty and responsibility to give students a strong civics lesson and a sound foundation for understanding the electoral process,” Newark Public Schools Superintendent Roger Leon said. “The Senior Voter Registration Day will begin what we hope will be a lifelong commitment to voter education, awareness and voting.”
