NEWARK, NJ — Authorities have released the identity of a man who was arrested after a shootout with police in Newark last week.

Details were initially sparse about the gunfire, which broke out around 11 a.m. on the 400-block of Irvine Turner Boulevard on July 28.

On Friday, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General released an update about the gunfire, identifying Shaquan Landrum, 34, of Hillside, as the shooter.

Here’s what happened, prosecutors alleged:

“According to the preliminary investigation, members of the United States Marshals Service NY/NJ regional fugitive task force were in Newark assisting the Newark Police Department’s fugitive apprehension team with executing an arrest warrant for attempted murder and other criminal charges stemming from a past incident in Hillside. Law enforcement encountered the individual being sought on the warrant, Mr. Landrum, inside a home on Irvine Turner Boulevard in the area of West Bigelow Street in Newark. Mr. Landrum barricaded himself inside the residence. Mr. Landrum fired gunshots at various times over a 20-minute period, striking objects including a police vehicle behind which officers had taken cover.”

Prosecutors said that an officer with the Newark Police Department’s emergency services unit fired back – striking and wounding Landrum. Emergency responders transported him to University Hospital for treatment.

No law enforcement officers were injured, authorities said.

Officers found a rifle and a handgun during a search of the residence.

In a separate statement made to reporters at the scene, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said that officers safely rescued a baby from the home using a bulletproof shield.

“I do know he did have a baby, I know the police retrieved the baby from his custody, we have the child so the child is not in danger, thank god, I don't know what he was trying to do, or what it was about … I do know he had a child with him and police safely removed the child from his care,” Baraka said.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office charged Landrum with attempted murder, attempt to cause serious bodily injury with a deadly weapon, possession of an assault firearm, possession of a privately made firearm without a serial number (commonly referred to as a ghost gun), endangering the welfare of a child, and other offenses.

A criminal investigation into the shooting continues, authorities said.
