NEWARK, NJ — A nonprofit recently handed out “personal care bags” to dozens of women experiencing homelessness at the YMCA of Newark – just in time for Valentine’s Day.

“When combatting homelessness, fleeing from a disaster, an abusive situation, or a host of other circumstances, women may be forced to leave without everyday necessities. Items taken for granted, like toothpaste and toothbrushes, menstrual products, and even a warm pair of socks, can provide a slight sense of security.”
The missions of each organization – “fostering a sense of sisterhood that brings women from diverse backgrounds together” in the case of PWST – and “providing opportunities for individual growth, youth and family development” in the case of the Newark YMCA – made the giveaway event a natural fit, organizers said.
Deina Marie Reed, founder of the nonprofit, said she was blown away by the response they got when they put out a call for donations.
