PHOTOS: 'Newark Scene and Heard' at Gallery Aferro
Mixed-media exhibit is the first public display for the Newark Black Artists Oral History Project
The "Newark Scene and Heard: Narratives of an Artist's Community" exhibit opened Friday at Gallery Aferro in Newark. The mixed media collection, curated by Bianca Monet at the Market Street gallery, features artists Élan, Leon Anthony James, Bianca Monet, Shani Peters, Nia I'man Smith.
The exhibit, made up of artists' audio recordings, muisc, photography, video and paintings, is the first public display for the Newark Black Artists Oral History Project, dedicated to collecting and preserving first-hand narratives of black visual arts from and/or currently located in Newark, according to the Gallery Aferro's website.
