Police have arrested a man who is accused of shooting an Irvington man to death in Newark in July, authorities announced Wednesday.

NEWARK, NJ — Police have arrested a man who is accused of shooting an Irvington man to death in Newark in July, authorities announced Wednesday.

Chauncey Venable has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose in connection with the death of Rasheed Mells, 24, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Public Safety Department.

Prosecutors released the following statement about Mells’ death:

“On Saturday, July 16, 2022, the Essex County Sheriff’s Office notified the Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force that a male had been shot on the 700-block of South 20th Street, Newark. Mells was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:07 p.m.”
