Pregnant Woman In Newark Fights Off Robbery Attempt: Police

An expectant mother managed to fend off a man who grabbed her by the neck and tried to steal her gold chain, Newark police said.

NEWARK, NJ — A pregnant woman suffered bruises, but managed to fend off a man who grabbed her by the neck and tried to steal her gold chain as she was walking in Newark earlier this week, authorities said.

According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the robbery attempt took place around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday when the victim was walking with another woman and a child on the 400-block of Market Street.

As the woman walked down the sidewalk, a man approached and tried to steal her chain, grabbing her around the neck in the process, police said.

The two women struggled with the suspect before he fled on foot, police said.

The victim was treated at an area hospital for minor injuries; her unborn baby is apparently unharmed, NBC New York reported.

Authorities are searching for the suspected robber, who they described as a 6-foot, 170-pound black man about 40-years-old, wearing a tan coat, a gray-hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and dark boots.
